WHS Service Club organizing food drive for Thanksgiving baskets

The United States has been called the land of opportunity, the land of plenty.  But there are people living in the US who do not see it that way. There are people in the US who do not know where their next meal is coming from. These people are victims of food insecurity.

Food insecurity, a term not every high school student may identify with, is when a person doesn’t know when they might eat again. Food insecurity applies to those who don’t get three meals a day.

In hopes to combat local food insecurity, the Service Club at Watertown High School launched its Thanksgiving basket food drive. With the help of Ms. Piscatelli and Ms. Leonard, students have been promoting a food drive to help those in need in Watertown and surrounding areas.

The WHS Service Club will be collecting and organizing the food drive to create the Thanksgiving baskets. On Monday, Nov. 23, the Service Club will pack all the Thanksgiving baskets and food in order for them to be sent out to local families. Last year, baskets were delivered to 35 local families.

If interested in volunteering time, or donating any non-perishable food, contact Ms. Piscatelli ([email protected]) or Ms. Leonard ([email protected]) at Watertown High.
