Austin Farry, shown in Watertown’s season opener, scored the Raiders’ go-ahead run and added an RBI single, but it was not enough as Arlington High dropped WHS to 0-2 with a 7-3 decision on Thursday, April 9, at Victory Field.

It’s not how you start.

For a Watertown High baseball team off to an 0-2 start, the age-old mantra hopefully holds true. Watertown fell to Arlington, 7-3, on Thursday at Victory Field.

After the Raiders jumped out to a 2-1 lead over the Arlington, shortstop Ryan Hood’s base-clearing double put the Spy Ponders ahead for good in the fourth inning, ending Kyle Foley’s afternoon on the mound. The junior lefthander left after 3⅔ innings of work and was tagged with four earned runs.

Similar to their Opening Day loss to Belmont, the Raiders suffered costly defensive errors. Down 1-0 after the first inning, the Raiders bounced back and put two runs on the board in the second inning. Arlington’s Dan Shaw walked Foley with the bases loaded, allowing Brendan Berkeley to score. On Greg Yegishyan’s sacrifice fly, Austin Farry dove into home to put the Raiders in front.

After Hood put the visitors up, 4-2, Farry drove in Santino Fierimonte with a two-out single, but Nate Munson-Palomba was thrown out at home trying to tie the game.

Raider hopes didn’t last long, however. Arlington stretched its lead to 7-3 behind a stellar performance in relief from George West, who retired the final six Watertown batters in order to end the game, including three straight strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth.

The Raiders look to get back on track as they go on the road to face Winchester on Monday, April 13.
