Watertown boys’ soccer misfires against Belmont
WHS looks to rebound with game against Winchester on tuesday night at Victory Field
September 9, 2014
In a disappointing day for the Watertown boy’s soccer program, the Raiders lost to their fierce rivals from Belmont for the second straight year, this time by a score of 2-0 on their home turf at Victory Field on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014. Two late goals from the Marauders made the difference, as the Raiders couldn’t find their offensive spark.
Watertown started the game pretty brightly with multiple scoring chances in the first half. Belmont senior goalkeeper Peter Berens made a pair of excellent saves to keep his team in the game, including a stunning fingertip save to deny Raider forward Roman Davis what seemed like a sure goal. Watertown senior forward Raffi DeSouza also had a great chance at the end of the first half, but pushed his shot wide after opening space on his favored right foot.
The Raider defense looked shaky in the first half and were soon exposed after a poor tackle led to a penalty kick being awarded to the Marauders in the 53d minute. Belmont senior Charlie Frigo calmly buried the spot kick, sending goalkeeper Joe Keikian the wrong way to open the scoring.
Three minutes later, senior Norman Kilavatitu doubled the Belmont lead, after a poor defensive header left him wide open for a simple header into the back of the net.
Reeling from conceding two quick goals, the Raider offense put together multiple good chances, but couldn’t capitalize as the score remained 2-0.
Davis and De Souza both had near misses, and senior Araz Ashjian fired a volley just wide of the post in the dying minutes of the game.
The Raiders never recovered from the two-goal deficit, and when the whistle blew the final score read Belmont 2, Watertown 0.
Coach Frank Cacia’s boys look to bounce back against Winchester on Tuesday night, Sept. 9, a 7 p.m. game at Victory Field.
